Max le Daron just recorded an Azonto mixtape for Inside The Box blog with the sounds he found in his trip to Ghana this summer during the Roots Of Azonto project.

“I just came back from Ghana to build a soundbank for the Azonto producers and to give them some sound engineering masterclasses. We wrote about our journey on a daily basis on This is Africa. Some obscure website/twitter account about ‘old fashioned’ world music kept posting about our project and retweeting what we posted. Their catchphrase on their account was “No MP3, no Autotune”, which is quite ironic considering most of the Azonto is exported directly in MP3 128 kbps from Fruity Loops and most of the singers (ab)use (of) the autotune effect.
About the content of the mixtape: I’d say 3/4 of the tunes are from the producers we met in Ghana (some of the tunes aren’t released yet, or at least weren’t when they gave those to use) and the rest is like the hit tunes that I heard everywhere in Accra (streets, taxis, buses, bars, clubs,…)“
