CHAMPION
East London’s Champion is one of the current heavyweight producers in UK garage. His signature sound marries smart, understated polyrhythm with hints of tribal percussion to dominating, swaying basslines not unlike those found in steppers dub but he feels just as much at ease toying with the conventions of house, 2step and grime. In 2011 he released the instantly classic UK funky cut Lighter through his own label Formula Recordings, providing one of the genre’s last defining moments. Further releases on labels such as Butterz, Roska Kicks & Snares, Digital Soundboy and Hyperdub have elaborated on this seminal blueprint whilst showing instances of stylistic progress as well.

THE BUSY TWIST
The Busy Twist is the much-lauded global bass project of fellow Londoners Gabriel Benn and Ollie Williams. Friends since childhood, these twentysomethings are on a quest for the holy grail: the beat that will unite people from all over the world in dance. The tracks featured on the Friday Night, Floor Excitement and Labadi Warriors ep’s are all built around the playing and chanting of the Ghanaian musicians they met on their numerous trips to Accra and its surroundings but at the same time remain firmly rooted in UK funky. With future excursions to Colombia, Brazil and Angola in the making, these lads seem to have embarked on a lifelong musical road trip; good thing they are making a pitstop in Brussels soon. Releases on Soundway Records and their own The People’s Ear imprint.
